Faculty members and graduate students wishing to participate in AGEP at IUPUI should contact the AGEP liaison, Kathryn Wilson.
IUPUI participates as a partner with Indiana University in The Midwest Crossroads AGEP which is a National Science Foundation grant-supported STEM program consisting of a consortium of Purdue University, Indiana University and Northwestern University.
IUPUI AGEP expects to identify five AGEP Scholars each year, with funds from AGEP, in laboratories of researchers in STEM disciplines on the Indianapolis campus and to raise the scholarly aspirations of IUPUI undergraduates majoring in STEM disciplines to apply for and succeed in graduate programs.
As a graduate student:
AGEP Student
Any under-represented graduate student in the STEM disciplines, particularly African-American, Hispanic/Latino and Native American students. These students can be pursuing any type of graduate degree. Students may participate in any AGEP sponsored event.
AGEP Scholar
An under-represented graduate student in the STEM disciplines, particularly African-American, Hispanic/Latino and Native American students, who has made a commitment to pursue the Ph.D. in a STEM discipline. AGEP Scholars have also agreed to actively increase the recruitment, retention and graduation rates of under-represented minorities, as well as to increase their placement in academic positions.
AGEP Scholars may receive an award of $3,000 to be used for travel to at least two meetings. One meeting must be a professional meeting in the student’s discipline chosen in consultation with the faculty mentor. The second meeting must be a recruiting meeting, preferably to the student’s undergraduate school, to promote IUPUI graduate programs, especially to other under-represented students. This second meeting may be accompanied by a faculty member or member of the graduate office staff and may be coupled with a professional meeting.
Funds remaining after travel may be used to aid thesis-related research.
As a faculty member:AGEP Faculty
Any IU faculty member who shares the AGEP program’s goal of increasing the number of under-represented minorities in the U.S. professoriate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. AGEP Faculty are part a network of colleagues who assist in the recruitment, retention and advancement of AGEP students into the professoriate within the Midwest Crossroads AGEP Alliance. AGEP Faculty will attend AGEP events and be proactive in providing students with guidance, a sense of community and specific strategies for successfully navigating their program of study.
AGEP Faculty Mentor
Any IUPUI faculty member who has been paired with an AGEP Scholar and who is committed to graduating and advancing this student into the professoriate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. AGEP Faculty Mentors will be invited to serve on the IUPUI AGEP Steering Committee and will be paid a modest honorarium. AGEP Faculty Mentors are expected to participate in all AGEP-sponsored activities at IUPUI, and participate in the AGEP program in the same way as the AGEP Faculty.
