MURI at IUPUI

Applications from faculty members and senior researchers are welcome now until September 10, 2008.

Student applications to be team members should be submitted between September 15, 2008 and September 22, 2008.

Students may initiate projects themselves. Student proposals to lead MURI teams are due on September 10, 2008.

Team application forms and student project initiation forms are available at http://crl.iupui.edu/muriIUPUI/student.asp

The decision for final selections will be made competitively, in consultation with the mentors, after the student-application deadline. Further details are available on the applications forms site.

The IUPUI Center for Research and Learning and the IUPUI Purdue School of Engineering and Technology MURI Program have established a new campus-wide MURI program, the IUPUI MURI MENTORSHIP PROGRAM, open to all disciplines, beginning Spring Semester 2008. This program will fund several inter/multidisciplinary undergraduate research projects (IUPUI MURI projects) under the mentorship of faculty members in any discipline, in any undergraduate, graduate, or professional school or unit on the IUPUI campus. The IUPUI MURI Mentorship Program is an extension of the original MURI Program housed in the School of Engineering and Technology.

Applications are sought from all IUPUI faculty and researchers who are interested in mentoring undergraduates to conduct inter/multidisciplinary research in teams of at least two students studying in different disciplines. Students or student groups may submit proposals through a faculty member or researcher who agrees to sponsor the research. This is a unique opportunity provided to IUPUI faculty and researchers for mentoring students while earning research funds and conducting pilot projects. The deadline for proposal submission is the 3rd Friday each December the Spring projects, March 15 each year for summer projects, and the first Friday in August for Fall and AY year projects. The IUPUI MURI Selection Committee will review the submitted proposals. Winning proposals will be announced by two weeks following the proposal deadline and the students will be asked to apply by two weeks following proposal approval.

How long does an IUPUI MURI project last?

For Academic Year 2008-09 there will be only one call for proposals, which will occur in the fall, for projects extending through May 1, 2009 (Academic Year Projects). A second call for proposals will be issued in mid-March for Summer MURI projects. Summer MURI Projects begin on the first Monday in June and extends for nine weeks. Students recruited by MURI Project Directors to Summer MURI Teams are designated UROP Fellows and participate in activities included in the IUPUI Summer UROP Fellows Program.

No cost extensions are possible to complete projects for the Academic Year or the summer at the request of the mentors.

Summer MURI

IUPUI Students: Note that the projects for the Fall 2008 MURI Program will be posted after August 15, 2008. The Summer MURI is a nine week program to be held from June 2nd till August 1st jointly with the UROP Summer Fellows Program. All applicants to the IUPUI MURI Summer Scholars Program are asked also to complete the IUPUI UROP Summer Fellows application materials. Due to the competitiveness of the MURI Summer Scholars and UROP Summer Fellows programs, the approval of a mentor does not guarantee final approval by the MURI director. The decision for final selections will be made competitively, in consultation with the mentors, after the student-application deadline. The participants will receive a stipend of $3,200 for working on a MURI project supervised by an IUPUI mentor. The participating students will be expected to attend the professional development activities organized by the UROP program. See the Summer UROP and IUPUI MURI websites for more information.
